PvP Weekly Update 05/18/2012

Hi folks,

Here we are at weekly update number two. Don’t have a great deal of information to share with you this week but I can give you an update on where we are in the process.

Before we get into that though, I want to clarify something from last week’s post. There seems to be some confusion about the fact that only one person is working on PvP at the moment. I think this stems from the fact that most players are unaware of the process that’s involved when creating (or re-creating in this case) a complete system in a game. When I say “system”, I’m talking about large scale features like Crafting and Duty Officers.

The process generally has multiple stages and depending on the stage you may only need one person actually working on it. Right now we are in a very early stage with the re-design of PvP. We don’t need multiple people devoted to the system at the moment. This doesn’t mean other team members are not involved in the process.

Creating a new system in a game is much like building a new house. You start with an architect (one person) and later on you need more people with different skill sets to complete the overall goal. For instance a house will eventually need electricians, plumbers and lots of general contractors before its completely finished. Game systems will need designers, artists, and programmers before it is complete and ready to be released. Hope this example helps to clear up the confusion.

This brings me to where we are at in the re-design process of PvP at the current time.

At the moment I am in the process of defining the overall big picture of PvP. I’m looking at your feedback, I’m looking at what other games are doing, I’m talking with Dan and Jack and other team members about what features they would like to see in the system. I’m also taking a long look at the current capabilities of our game engine in relation to any new or improved features planed for PvP.

I’m actually making a great deal of progress but that sort of progress is generally invisible to you guys the players. I’m hoping that this weekly forum update will keep you involved in the process and give you an idea of where we are at and where we might be going with the system overall.

If you want to help me right now in this current stage of the process, what I need are ideas. Tell me what you would like to see, tell me what you think would be great features we should consider for a new PvP system. Just post an idea, how you think it adds to PvP, how you think it fits within the IP, and why you think it’s a “must have” new feature. Later on in the process I’ll be asking for different kinds of feedback but at the moment this is really the only kind of feedback that really helps.

That’s about it for this week, I should have a few more juicy items for you next week .

Have a good weekend,

Goz

However there appears to be at least a few who are blatant fan boy worshippers that they prefer to listen to.
One of them goes so far as to say that the STO forums would be a "better place if 50 or so outspoken people were banned."
Call them lockboxes, lootboxes, super packs, gift packs, treasure boxes, mystic chests, or Chupacabra's lunchpails, but these virtual boxes of mystery, fame, and fortune are all the rage in MMOs these days. Few studios have resisted the siren's call of such easy money, much to the dismay of many-a-gamer.

The idea is that a game will dish out to players free locked treasure boxes that require purchased keys to open. The allure of the box's mystery prize is often too strong to resist, especially when there's the possibility of a huge reward inside. The result too often is strong buyer's remorse and studio glee.

There's been a lot of conversation around lockboxes here on Massively, so I wanted to dedicate this week's Perfect Ten to dissecting the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth of these items for you.

1. Lockboxes are gambling, plain and simple.

If anyone tries to refute the above claim to you, then be prepared to listen to a chain of logic so twisted and bent that it's probably been run through a yoga class. The simple truth of all this is that you're plunking down a set amount of real-world money for a possibility of getting a reward you desire. It's gambling.

It's gambling... except it's worse.

You know what would be weird? If you walked into a casino and none of the machines or tables told you the odds. Everything else would be the same: the payout, the mechanics, the money required to play, but no odds. Just give us your money and hope you win but never have a clue how great or small your chances are of actually winning.

That is lockboxes in a nutshell. Nobody's forcing MMO studios to disclose odds, and it's in their best interests to not do it. They wouldn't want to scare away those pocketbooks, after all!

2. The house always wins.

Any smart person knows that it's never in a gambling establishment's best interests to have its clients win more than the house. Over time, the house always wins. Period.

This is no different when it comes to MMOs utilizing lockboxes, except that the situation is even more stacked against the player. Not only are the odds never disclosed (see #1), but the studio is risking absolutely nothing by offering these rewards. You think a Cardassian joy-cruiser costs any more or less to virtually produce than a few XP potions?

The studio risks nothing by losing and gains everything by your simply playing (and paying).

3. You feel wasteful if you throw out lockboxes.

What enrages a lot of folks over lockboxes is that it's hard not to feel like we're being psychologically manipulated with this system. You know why we feel like that? Because we are -- and in so many, many ways.

Not only do studios dangle the promise of powerful rewards by taking the easy path of a credit card payment, but they go the extra step of making you feel bad if you don't participate. Most games that I know utilize lockboxes hand them out like candy to players. "Here!" the game grins, "Have one! Or two! It's free! All for you!"

Before you know it, your inventory is packed full of these boxes you've discovered. The problem is that you can't open them without that expensive key. Sure, you could just throw the box away (I do and never regret it), but there's that part of your brain that's telling you you've already won whatever is in that box. It's yours, by golly! Why would you waste it by tossing it aside?

See how you're being played?

4. Lockboxes can jeopardize an MMO's standing in a country.

The lockbox phenomenon has been going on a lot longer in the East than it has in the West, and as such many of those countries have butted heads with the game companies over these shady practices. As a result, there have been laws and regulations put into place to hold back the companies from going full-on Ebenezer Scrooge on players, but American and European governments have yet to respond in kind.

I'm just saying that if the argument can be made that lockboxes are virtual gambling, then they're going to end up as subjects of court rulings and possible legal entanglements. We've already seen this happen, and there's no reason to think it won't occur again.

5. Lockboxes cheapen any MMO in which they appear.

People care deeply about their MMOs, sometimes to the point of silliness, but the emotion is genuine. The games we love we want to see succeed, thrive, and live for a long time. What we don't generally want is for someone with a polyester sports coat, pinkie rings, and greased-back hair stomping into our beloved playgrounds and "classing up the joint" by throwing slot machines everywhere.

Lockboxes are tacky. There, I said it. They don't add to the atmosphere or the fun; they just exist to make money and be obnoxious about doing so. They're a sign to me that a developer has sold out on standards to an extent and has little concern for the original vision of the game or the players' feelings of ownership. They take away the pretense of earning anything through skill or time and just trade it for money and randomness.

6. Lockboxes tarnish the good aspects of the free-to-play model.

You'd think that with my obvious distaste for lockboxes I've soured on that whole F2P "fad," but that's not the truth. I actually love F2P. I think it helps more than harms the industry, and it aggravates me when elements of it like lockboxes spoil the rest of the model's reputation by association.

What people want is the ability to just outright purchase the item they like. You know, as if you were in a store. But since that's just a one-time purchase with a fixed cost, it doesn't have the same potential as a lockbox, which may reward the same item only after multiple purchases often costing far more money than the item is worth.

One blogger investigated how many of Star Trek Online's red gift boxes would be opened to statistically ensure that a Jem'Hadar ship would be looted. It came out to 153 tries (and $153 spent). No wonder the studios don't want to tell you the odds.

I guess that with any business model, you're going to have the potential for good business-client endeavors as well as the bad. Doesn't mean we have to like it all or throw it all out.

7. Public support for lockboxes is minuscule.

Here's the crazy thing that most people can't quite comprehend: People publicly hate lockboxes, and yet the lockboxes persist. Players who come out supporting their inclusion in any MMO are far outnumbered by those who think they're evil. Every major MMO I've seen that put them in has suffered a constant forum barrage of angry players yelling at the company to take them out of the game. Heck, we've gotten into this fight more than once.

It's pretty much a PR disaster for any game studio. Some studios try to reason with players, ignore the controversy, or even disguise it somewhat. Recently, many MMOs have made a token effort to offer free keys as drops or what have you in the game, but that dog won't hunt. It's a losing battle to try to convince players that a studio's scamming them for money is a good thing.

So if there's so little public support and its giving these studios black eyes, why do it? Well, that's simple:

8. Lockboxes make money, and that's hard for F2P studios to ignore.

I don't have any solid numbers on this, but there's plenty of anecdotal evidence to support it, not to mention developers who justify lockboxes by saying just this.

Let's step into an MMO game studio's shoes for a minute. Making games is a business. The studio's bottom line is to make money, ideally by doing something the developers love. If it does not make money, it closes up shop, and the online game that cannot function alone. So making a healthy profit is paramount to the studio's and game's survival, and it is almost impossible to ignore a proven hit source of revenue that costs very little to set up and will most certainly make bucketfuls of cash.

What would you do, Mr. or Ms. Business Owner? Ignore piles of money on principle or suck up the bad PR and make money back for the company and its investors?

9. It's in the studio's best interest to push lockboxes as hard as they can.

Once you are sliding down that slippery slope of compromised values, it is hard to put on the brakes. You might as well go for the gusto and advertise these lockboxes up the kazoo. (That's my column limit for cutesy words, by the way.)

It is a little like movie studios pushing popcorn concessions or restaurants pushing wine: There are the big profit margins to be made, and it would be negligent for the company to undersell it.

This is why we get obnoxious moves like STO throwing a message up on every player's screen whenever the big prize is looted from a lockbox by someone else in the game. I don't mean to keep single out STO here, but it's just the most blatant about these practices, so it invites criticism.

10. Lockboxes open the back door to real money trading.

RMT is another hot topic that I am not interested in judging today, but it is important to note that lockboxes can and sometimes do establish roundabout ways for a game to engage in RMT without being blatant about the practice.

How so? Well, if the game allows you to sell anything you find in the lockbox to other players, you've got a quick way to make a virtual buck with a real one. Say you buy a pack of in-game trading cards (SOE is famous for these) or a lockbox and find a very rare treasure. You can then sell the item you bought with real-world cash for in-game currency, and the RMT gods smile down on you.

This is not the most egregious aspect of lockboxes, but it is worth noting and watching.

The fierce Ferasans have joined the Klingon Defense Force!
Starting this Thursday (May 17, 2012), around 10AM PDT, the KDF's new Ferasan playable species and Bridge Officers will be available for sale in the C-Store.
A felinoid species that originated on the planet Ferasa, Ferasans are closely related to Caitians. Ferasans are bipedal, have tails that assist their balance, extended maxillary canine teeth and large eyes with excellent night vision. Their skin is covered with a soft fur coat, and their felinoid ears can pick up frequencies that most humanoids are unable to detect. Some Ferasans have telepathic abilities.
Ferasan Playable Species (480 Cryptic Points)
Unlocking this option allows you to create Klingon Empire Ferasan characters with the following characteristics:
Predatory Instincts: 75 percent bonus to Jump Height, 5 percent bonus to Stealth and Perception, 5 percent bonus to Melee Damage, 10 percent bonus to Exploit Damage
Two traits of the player's choice
As a bonus, unlocking Ferasans also unlocks new cosmetic options for any Federation Caitian character on your account (if you have unlocked Caitians)!
Note: This playable species is only available as a Klingon Defense Force character. Purchase of this option unlocks Ferasans for every character slot on an account. You must qualify for Klingon play to make a Ferasan character.

Klingon Empire Ferasan Bridge Officer Requisition (400 Cryptic Points)
All Ferasan Bridge Officers have the following traits:
• Predatory Instincts: bonus to Jump Height, Stealth and Perception, Melee Damage and Exploit Damage

• Telepathic: Bonus to Perception and extends duration of Expose

I'm withing about 12 EDC of having enough for a full MK XI set. Currently this character has two ships he bounces between, mostly because I love both of them:

Ship One: Excelsior Refit
Forward Weapons: 2x Dual Tetryon Beam Banks, 1x Tetryon Array, 1xQuantum Launcher (Pondering switching to Photons)
Aft Weapons: 3xTetryon Arrays, 1x Quantum Launcher
Current Consols (all Blue MK XI): Engineering, Plasma Manifold, Neutronium Armor, Engine Injector and Shield Booster; Science: Assimilated Modual, and SHield strengthing console; Tactical: Tetryon Pulse Generator, Zero Point Quantum CHamber and a directed energy distrabution manifold
Bridge Officer Layout:
Engineering: EmPower Shields I, EmPower Shields II, EmPower Weapons I, EmPower Engines I, Engineering Team II, Reverse Shield Polarity II and Vent Warp Plasma III
Science: Hazard Team I, Science Team II
Tactical: Tactical Team I, Attack Pattern Beta I, High Yield Torpedo III

Ship Two: Odyssey Operations Cruiser, this ship I still am experimenting with
Forward Weapons: 1x Dual Antiproton Bank, 2x Antiproton Array, 1xQuantum Launcher
Aft Weapons 3x Antiproton Array, 1x Quantum launcher
Current Consoles (again all Blue MK XI): Engineering: Chevron Separation, Plasma Manifold, RCS Thruster, Engine Injector, Shield Booster; Science: Assimilated Modual, Aquarius Escort, WorkerBees; Tactical: AP Mag Regulator, ZP Quantum Chamber
Bridge Officer Layout:
Engineering EmPower Shields I, EmPower SHields II, Engineering Team I, Reverse Shield Polarity II, Vent Warp Plasma III
Science: Haxard Team I, Science Team II
Tactical: Tactical Team I, Beam Fire at Will I, Attack Pattern Beta I, Spread II and HY III

Right now I'm having a hard time choosing between the MACO and the Omega sets, while the Omega, I'm trying to determine which one would be best for a cruiser, and I'm leaning slightly towards the Omega because of the tetryon glider ability that would compliment my Excelsior's current weapons loadout. Any thoughts?

For starters, the STO forum comments about "oh please charge us for FEs, we'll gladly pay" have to stop. With the awful plotholes, dialogue, and lack of real heart in any of the stories, they have to be kidding if they think her work will sell. A famous STOked cohost once said he wouldnt buy her books. Their plan of hiring a writer to write "their" stories was bad because her stories are bad. STO needs a real Trek writer to write real engaging storylines to pull the fans back in. Not stories written around the latest tech they are trying to showcase, then they complain showcasing new tech costs too much. I know what I'd do, Id wait for all the podcasts to review it first, and when they have all shot holes through it, see how many buy them then. I sure as hell better not have to pay being a gold sub. Ive just resigned myself to Foundry content to get my Trek story fix, because it aint coming out of Kestral.

5/15/12 Update: Original title of thread got reworded by JF mods, Im guessing since a nuke went off in another thread here and the whole forum has too many eyes on it. I write better worded titles than that :P My post wasnt edited though.

Hey, everyone. I am close to becoming VA, and I am wondering which ship I should get. The two ships I am mainly considering are the Galaxy and Excelsior retrofits.

I am interested in the Galaxy for it's Saucer Separation console, it sounds interesting. I don't know how useful it would really be, though.

I am interested in the Excelsior for it maneuverability, and the transwarp drive sounds like a fun toy.

I am not as interested in the Odyssey because of the poor turn rate, and I have never used a carrier before, so I am thinking about buying the Flight-Deck Cruiser (400 C-Points) for my Klingon to try out a carrier before I invest in the Atrox Carrier.

I am a Science officer, I like to be a medic on the ground but tank in space. I started out STO with a science vessel, and I liked the turn rate but hated how quick I died, so I moved to a Cruiser at Captain. The Excelsior sounds better in that regard, but the Saucer Seperation may outweigh the benefit of the turn rate. I also usually play solo.

I would like to know which ship you guys think would be best for me, or if you would suggest a different ship altogether. Thanks!

I started this thread to let everyone know how much I appreciate them allowing me the oppertunity to join Jupiter force, and also to let everyone know that my very spiffy ASUS gaming laptop was actually mroe excited than me, and blew out her operating system, So while i sit here without a way to reliably get into the game and teamspeak until the recovery DVD's arrive from ASUS, I thought i should let you all know That i was excited about being part of the team and not just joining to join.

PVP Weekly Update 05/11/2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi folks welcome to a new feature...

PVP Weekly Update 05/11/2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi folks welcome to a new feature - The PVP Weekly Update.

Every Friday before I leave the office for the day I’m going to jump into the PVP forums and give you an update. It may be a small update or it might be a big update. It may be a very simple “there is nothing notable to report this week, how is everyone doing?” sort of thing. Or, it could be “here is a list of big things that are on their way to you on Tribble. Go take a look and tell me what you think” sort of post.

Whatever it is, it’s going to happen every week.

Today’s Topic – State of PVP in STO.

Put simply, the current state of PVP in STO = FAIL

I don’t think I can be any clearer on this point. You the players don’t like it, we the developers don’t like it and all the data we pull from the servers backs up the statement as well. Now, we could start discussing why PVP is the way it is. There are lots of reasons, some you as players know and some you don’t. Discussing that particular topic wouldn’t move us forward, now is not the time to figure out who is to blame for what and why.

It is however time to move forward. The first question we (the developers) had to ask ourselves is can PVP be saved?

I don’t use the word “Saved” lightly. I don’t mean fixed, updated, or fun. I literally mean saved.

Now, what I’m about to tell you is going to scare a few people, it’s going to make some of you angry. It’s not meant to do either of those things, and please don’t read into anything I type. I’m not trying to be sarcastic, blame you the players for anything, or infer that the opinions of the players in STO that care about PVP don’t matter . I just want to make sure you understand where we are at in this process.

Right now because PVP is in such bad shape that we (the developers) have to decide if we think we can turn this problem around. Participation in PVP related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people that log in to the game and play in any significant way.

See… I told you.. scary. I know, some of you are reading this and getting angry. I understand but this is simply the bare naked truth.

Cryptic is a business and everything that makes up STO requires resources to develop, implement, and maintain. I think it’s pretty obvious that since the launch of STO that PVP has not had a fair share of those resources allocated to it. This fact is the primary reason PVP is in the state that it’s currently in.

Something has to be done, PVP cannot stay the way that it is now. We either have to try to save it, or take it out of the game completely. We have to allocate resources in order to save it and that’s where I come into the picture.

Right this moment, I’m the only resource PVP gets. My job is to figure out if I can find a way to improve the entire system in a way that does not impact development of the rest of the game in any significant way. It’s going to be a challenge to put it mildly, but I’m going to try. I’m going to do my best to make PVP a viable STO gameplay feature that appeals to a much larger audience than it does now.

It’s simply going to have to get better and appeal to a much larger group of players on a regular basis if it’s going to survive. This also means that many of you are not going to like the changes I am forced to make in order to meet these goals, but before you get too upset at something I change you might want to consider the alternative, which would be no PVP at all.

There are big changes coming to PVP, some I think you are going to like, others no so much because no one likes change. Some are not going to make a whole lot of sense at the time because you won’t be seeing the whole long term plan I have in store for PVP over the course of the next year or so.

As far as these forums go, keep in mind that much of what is bothering you right now at this particular time in the current implementation of the PVP system isn’t something I’m really going to get very involved with. It’s all going to have to change, and change in a very big way. I’m not going to spend much time trying to solve an current issue you might have right at this very moment when there is a very high probability that a month or two down the road a large scale change to the PVP system in general is going to solve the issue.

Here is an example..

I see lots of threads about KDF players having access to gear that FED players do not. This isn’t going to be a problem in the new system since their will not be any FED vs KDF PVP. All PVP in the new system will be cross faction queues.

More information in next week’s edition..

Have a good weekend.

Goz
1. Did you purchase a Master Key to open either the Cardassian or Ferengi lock boxes?
2. If you purchased one and not the other - why?
3. Have you visited the LOBI store?

What if we combined territory control with the way Star Trek Armada played? Ive only played Armada II. But I remember playing it and thinking, "I dont want to play as filthy Klingons, or Romulans, and certainly not Borg in campaign mode". But when I did, I quickly changed my tune and got into the mindset of those ruthless Fed enemies.

So, my proposal, lets play as ALL the factions in just PvP! Heres how it could work. The game is already broken down into sectors. When your fleet makes a starbase, you must decide what sectors you are responsible to protect. Lets say you can choose up to three sectors to defend as your Fed fleet. Same for Klinks.

If you want to attack, you decide what sector you want to queue up to play as attackers. Certain sectors can only be attacked and defended by the proper factions. So, lets say Sirius can only be attacked by Kiligons or Borg. If you are currently logged in as your Fed toon, you can play as an attacking Klink that ISNT your Klink toon (if you have one of those too). I'll explain why you would do that in a moment. Or, if you have ranked up high enough beyond 50, you may have unlocked playing as the Borg! Why would you want to attack as a Borg? Because as a Fed, you cant attack another Fed space sector as a normal Fed. But as a Borg, you can attack a rival fleet's territory of the same faction. Instead of the lame AI acting as the attackers in Red Alerts, now the players are both the good guys and the bad guys.

Sectors will have win/loss ratios assigned to each. If your Fleet is assigned to a sector, you care very much about that W/L ratio, because having it at a certain ratio provides kickbacks to your fleet in the form of crafting discounts, discounts on buying ships via dilithium as you rank up your toons, and rank accelerators that work in your pvp rank to unlock better ships a bit faster from the other factions and your own.

We dont need to flesh out the other faction's story content right away to be able to play as them in just pvp. We all know that all these factions are attacking each other, aside from just the Feds and Klingons going at it. The story world can change as Cryptic wants it to, but all these factions will always be going at each others throats, and thats all you need if you are tired of just Fed v Klink.

Lets assume you can only attack one faction as one faction (maybe they can change that and have tag team factions battles as the story permits). So, you are in your Fed toon and you sign up to attack as a Borg. But of the 10 needed to form an attack and launch it, 7 have already chosen Klink, and you chose Borg. You can either change to be a Klink too, or leave that queue and letother Klinks do that attack. As soon as 10 Klinks are ready to pounce, a timer starts. A Red Alert is sent out to all Fleets assigned to defend that sector! The Feds who just got the Bat Signal can either leave their mission if they choose or ignore it. If they arent in a mission at the time, more than likely they will answer the call.

More than one fleet can be assigned to a sector defense. So it wont be about just one fleet responsible for a sector and maybe that fleet isnt in game at the moment. And it wont be about one fleet always getting singled out to be picked on. Sectors can be defended by large fleets as well as several small fleets. It will also be balanced, so as fleets decide what sectors they will defend, the sectors add up the fleets already committed and the individual accounts attached to that fleet. So a fleet half full of alts only counts as half its size. In simple terms, if there were only 10 sectors, all sectors must begin to fill up with accounts (not toons) assigned to defend it equally, every fleet cant load up on Sirius sector on signup week until the other sectors have fair representation.

Your pvp participation is broken into three different categories of benefits. There is the main benefit ofhaving the sectors you defend being at a specific W/L ratio (a ratio thatmaybe gets reset by Cryptic every 3 months so it doesnt get ruined beyond repair) Then there is the individual benefits that are broken down as to how they help you personally and how they effect your fleet, big or small. You will be required to defend your sectors playing as your home Fed or Klink fleet toon and you will be equally required to play as an attacker as another faction that isnt your home fleet toon. So, you cant always just be about defense, you must go out and cause havoc against other sectors too. If you dont spread your pvp playtime equally, you hurt your individuals benefits, and may get cut off from fleet benefits if you arent a team player. a team player is a guy that equally defends and attacks. A guy not being a team player is a fleet member that only defends or only attacks because we cant have everyone sitting around to defend and no one attacking and vice versa.

Stay with me. You defend your fleet's assigned sector, you benefit that sector and your fleet. You play as an attacker against another Fed or Klink controlled sector, you hurt another fleet's sector ratio which in turn benefits yours, because the top three sectors with the best defense ratio gets added benefits. And maybe every three months, you can move around what three sectors your fleet defends, but you cant change mid quarter to assign yourself to a sector thats currently in the top 3. Maybe every quarter the ratios get reset, fleets pick new sectors to defend because each sector has a unique pvp map to play from, and we start it up again fresh, so that ratios dont get out of hand, and the rich dont get insanely rich for too long.

So, your PvP rank is separate from your campaign rank somewhat. As you begin the game, you can only play as your main Fed defending, and as an attacker, you can play as Romulan or something. You still get subdivided into the rank pvp, so Lieutenants arent playing VAs. As you get to Captain, you unlock the ability to unlock playing as a Breen or Gorn or something. But even though you can unlock Breen now, you still have to get your PvP rank up to really unlock them ( a second lock). You cant just hit captain and instantly play Breen and have never played as a Romulan first in PvP. As you get to endgame at VA, then you unlock the ability to unlock the Borg or Species 8472. You cant just hit VA, and go straight to playing as Borg, your PvP rank must meet a certain point prerequisite as well. As you rank up normally, you unlock certain species to play as in PvP, but then you must also have ranked up your PvP rank to actually play as those endgame species. 3/4 of the ships in the faction can be played at no additional charge to Gold members. Cooler faction ships can be C store. If balanced correctly, the c store ships arent more powerful, you are really just paying for a look of a ship, a newer class, or paying to customize the look/color of your Romulan ship the way we customize our Fed and Klink ships. Standard ships come with the standard look, no customization. Got to give the C store a profit to make, lol.

As a STO fleet member, its your responsibility to play as defender and attacker as it affects territory control, and hit certain marks to benefit your fleet and yourself. If you are or arent in a fleet, you can play PvP that doesnt effect territory control if you are fighting Breen vs Borg, or some other combo where Fed or Klink isnt involved in the fight because only Fed or Klink can defend sectors that affect fleet and personalbenefit kickbacks.

And of course this assumes Cryptic can balance PvP properly, especially after I just added a ton more factions to play as, lol. I dont think fleet starbases and territory control should have AI deciding battles. Make every fleet earn their benefits with TRUE battle. This type of system acts as that spontaneous Red Alert system most of us love. Never know when the Red Alert will go off and your Fleet needs you! And when you queue up to attack, you will be able to see ahead of time the live and current W/L ratio of each sector, so you can see which sectors need attacking to take them down a notch. Obviously you wont choose to be a part of an attack against one of the sectors YOUR fleet defends.

The battles themselves would be 10 v 10. First to get the opponents tickets down from 50 to 0 wins. And the win or loss is tallied into that sector's W/L ratio. If 10 enemies mount up to attack, and at least 10 defenders dont answer the call within a specified period once the timer starts, the attacking team gets 1/20th of the credit for a full win. Or some fair fraction. So, if the call for defenders keeps going unanswered, the sector takes a hit in its ratio even if no one is at home. As a PvPer, you want to balance your attacks against opposing sectors so that your fleet rivals have a worse defense ratio than the ones you are responsible for defending. Even if the Feds outnumber the Klinks, Feds are essentially attacking Fed assets in the form of other factions. You will also want to attack Klink assets as well as Fed assets, because the Klink sectors are in the running for Top 3 sectors defended too. If you are a Fed, who plays a Klink too, you probably arent going to attack a Klink sector where your Klink toon is assigned to defend when you are logged in as a Fed, and vice versa. Unless you are dumb enough to be your own conflict of interest, lol.

I may be leaving holes here and there, but Im sure the big PvP guys here at Jupiter Force see where Im going with this. Feel free to further tweak and build on my idea if you like where Im going.

*The Pakled...

With Cryptic’s success with the new drop boxes, it is rumored some of these new drop boxes may make an appearance in game soon…

The Pakled Drop Box – Don’t point and laugh at these guys, their smarter than you think! Possible loot includes a purple Pakled bridge officer (abilities include attack pattern bad-oral-hygiene – space, stand and stare – ground), Pet Pakled, Pakled garbage bag personal armor Mk IV, broken Mk XI rifle, and some lucky players will receive an exclusive Pakled opera mp3 file. Make us smart, open those boxes and make things go!

The bajoran drop box – Not to be confused with a refugee care package, these little mommas will be teaming with bajor-canon loving items for all. Those who walk the path of the prophets could be the owner of a blanket, a box of Kleenex, an earring or even an official Ki prophet decoder ring. Some really lucky captains out there might even score some of the rarest bajor loot, such as the Shard of Infinite Hasbarat, hull art “my kid beat up your Cardassian honor student” bumper sticker (tier 4 ships and up) or the extra rare “Best of the Prophets” soundtrack. (Warning – those players who were lucky enough to receive the Galor Class Cardassian cruiser should NOT open these boxes while using this vessel as their current ship. Bajoran boxes will become gravimetric mines causing massive damage. Also, there will be a 23% chance some of your doffs will join their cause and leave your roster to sit in a garden and play a flute)

The Orion Syndicate box of doom – They’ve always had to evade the Federation, hiding their dirty deals, always one step in front of the law. Now it’s their turn to mess up your day! Lucky looters could get 10,000 engine batteries, 4 Miranda’s, 55,000 chronometric particle traces , an exocomp, or one of many other useless commodities intended to do one and only one thing: plug the shit out of your bank and item tray. Good luck selling these things on the exchange! Need a data sample? Hail your buddy, he’s probably just received 30,000 of them! Oh boy, another tribble! (Not available for KDF players. This event would be considered too close to new content and therefore not permitted under current policy)

Currency drop box – One currency? Come on, where’s the fun in that? Players have a chance on receiving any number of STO currencies, such as 1000 dilithium, 2 C-store points, 40 Farmcash, 2 Euros, a pack of cigarettes and a box of twinkies, ( jailhouse currency), 100 gold pressed latinum, 5 WoW Gold, 14 chocolate covered grasshoppers, 4 Lobi crystals, 20,000 energy credits, a Mk XI MACO toilet paper voucher or $200 monopoly money. It doesn’t matter what the currency is, it’s all going toward buying more keys anyway, right?

Bad idea console loot box – These consoles didn’t quite make the cut, so were offering them as exclusive prizes of chance! Unlocking a box could earn you:

Instant Crash console – causes your game to instantly crap itself. 2 day cool down

Transwarp to TOR console – instantly closes STO and opens TOR launcher

Rage-Quit console – upon activation, makes your ship glow hot red, spew profanity across subspace and log you off.

Wil Weaton Voiceover Console – Once activated, you will be entertained by none other than Wesley Crusher for a 1 hour continuous whine fest. Holodeck and warp drive will also go down. (I’m an acting ensign, he he he he SLAP!)

Tom Baker Scarf Repel Console – When activated, a scarf will fling out from your ship and slap enemy vessels back 15,000 Km. Works well against plasma attacks. Also enables jelly-baby attack pattern alpha.

Cryptic Security Team – When activated, program broadcasts your passwords, e-mail address and credit card information to every player in zone. Cool down is 15 minutes, but console won’t acknowledge it for at least 1 year.

Interior drop boxes – Coming in mid September, these little gems are sure to be a hot commodity for STO players!

The CSI interior pack – enables new visuals such as chalk body patterns on the floor, yellow crime scene tape on doorways and blood spatter in the corridors.

The Redkneck interior pack – duct tape on the doors, toilet seats for windows, double wide bridge graphics, moonshine still in the mess hall, feels just like home! Wo hoo!!

The TOS Meth Lab Set – Everybody knew Chekov was selling on deck 4. Deny it no longer! Comes with a lab kit, 20 gallons of hot hazardous byproduct and enables random security sweeps on your crew deck. (Using this interior set will also enable a random explosion hazard, causing 20% hull damage and 4 doffs a stay in sick bay)

…………in all seriousness, yes the boxes are irritating, but their sales fund the game we all love to play. That’s the price we pay for free to play, hey hey hey….keep digging people. Bomb bajor.

"Dstahl said a long while back CBS will not allow the Kzinti into STO, so they went with the offshoot name of Ferasan or whatnot. But that would not be a playable race or faction.

It is actually due to IP rights from their inventor - writer Larry Niven. It could be that he licensed them to the wing commander universe and there is some legal rider attached that prevents them being used else where - I am not sure. On a side note if you are interested in the Kzinti Mr. Niven has a fantastic book series Man vs. Kzinti Wars - it very much feels like a trek meets wing commander universe and is a great read.

To answer the questions if the KDF are getting a new race "soon" Dan has answered yes a few times and soon is actually soon in this case

Prepare your BOP to launch fur balls soon!"

Just to keep things straight and not meaning to demean a Dev, but the Wing Commander Cats are "Kilrathi" and have nothing to do with Niven's "Kzinti."

The copyright problem comes from Larry giving permission to the above mentioned "Man-Kzin Wars" authors.

Someone please let them know on STO Forums.

Hey all,

I just recently returned to the game and am going through content for the first time. I'm currently working on the Romulan storyline and everytime I have to face a Romulan D'deridex/Warbird, I get my butt handed to me. I'm an Engineer, flying Cruisers. Currently I'm flying the Tier 4 Galaxy class. The fight will be going along decently and then my hull strength *rapidly* drops and I explode. I think it's primarily their Heavy Plasma Torpedoes annihilating me, but I don't know how to successfully defend against them. Usually I don't have time to try and manually target them and shoot them down.

Any advice you guys can give me? It's getting really frustrating to blow up 5+ times everytime I have to face one in a mission.

The Vault - Under the Thalaron Generator in the last Vault Room

Mine Enemy - When you rescue the Horta, on the Northern Pillar Rock Formation (going by mini-map), its the egg facing west from the pillar, the one by itself

Frozen - As you approach Obisek's room, turn left and go to the Southern room (as on the mini-map) and use the console on the far left of that room (proceeding east in other words once inside the room)

Coliseum - As you approach the cave, a Ferengi lock box is near the hillside with the animals for the Engineering Accolade, the Ferengi lock box is the lobi crystal and it is buried into the sand xD

Cutting the Cord - As you approach Hakeev, there is a container under the starcase before heading through the arch. That is the lobi crystal

The game has changed quite a bit and I'm finding myself in need of a bit of guidance. With the removal of of the old badge system, which missions I should replay in order to outfit my new Atrox Carrier in preparation for normal STF queues? I'm already working on doing The New Link a few times for the weapons but I am lost as far as the rest of equipment I should be aiming for. As far as Dilithium, can you suggest a couple of methods for maximizing daily dilitihium also?

Quote:

Recently Cryptic Studios' Star Trek Online team has pressed forward with a mix of new releases and old reruns in an effort to entertain the playerbase while we await the anticipated release of Season 6 in June.

Some of the recent releases, such as Spotlight on the Foundry, a new Klingon mission titled Alpha, the new Caitian Atrox carrier for the Federation faction, and a duty officer commendation XP bonus weekend, have all been fairly well-received. We have also seen the return of the Ask Cryptic blogs, and apparently we will also be seeing the return of the fan-favorite Engineering Reports at the end of this month.

The question remains, however, whether or not the those relative successes can overcome the controversies that seem to surround the game's other recent releases -- namely, the introduction of what is arguably a new currency and the infusion of yet another time-gated mission.

Featured Episode reruns return!

Huzzah, right?! Right?! Well, I have to admit, there are new players who will be very happy to see the return of the unique rewards offered for the completion of the Featured Episode series. Players will recall that the four series consist of The Devidians, The Breen, Cloaked Intentions, and most recently, The 2800.

From May 3rd to May 10th, players can undertake the Devidian series again, and upon completion of the final mission (The Night of the Comet), they can obtain the useful Ophidian cane.

Each subsequent week, a different series will become available to replay so that its unique reward can be obtained: a Breen Tactical bridge officer from the Breen series, a Reman Science bridge officer from Cloaked Intentions, and the Shard of Possibilities from The 2800.

However, veteran players were just a tad disappointed with the reruns of missions they've already played and from which they've already received the rewards. Where is their incentive to replay those missions?

And Cryptic responded: Lobi Crystals. Lobi crystals? What are they, you ask? Well, let's get down to it, shall we?

Is it a currency or isn't it?

It should come as no real surprise to anyone who has played STO since the game transitioned to the free-to-play model that the changes in priorities of the development of the game have been tumultuous at best.

The introduction of the new currency called dilithium was meant to unify and replace the myriad currencies the game had before the F2P change. Medals, marks, and emblems were all combined into dilithium that is also tradable for C-Store points, which can be purchased for real-life currency. An exchange was even created so the market could handle the ebb and flow of the value of the dilithium in comparison to the C-Store points. Gone were the days when non-tradable currencies likes marks or emblems would hang around gathering dust... or so we thought.

Enter Lobi Crystals, STO's response to the supposed cries for a "second-chance currency" for those who bought the revenue-generating keys and opened lockboxes but didn't get what they really wanted.

Currently, there are two ways to obtain Lobi Crystals. The first way is to replay the Featured Episodes during this month's reruns of all four series. There is only one crystal hidden in each episode, and that crystal can only be obtained once. This means that a player has the ability to earn a total of 20 crystals during the month of May, and then only if he finds each one hidden in all 20 episodes. He cannot grind the missions over and over in order to gain more crystals.

If he wants more than 20 crystals, he'll have to use the second method for obtaining them, and that's by obtaining a key to open a lockbox. Each lockbox contains an item, which is at least supposed to be desirable, like an XP boost, a set of consumable battle pets or batteries, or even the Ferengi D'Kora Marauder ship. But the boxes also contain a small (very small) number of Lobi crystals.

The crystals are non-tradable. They can be used only to buy items at the Lobi Crystal Consortium at Drozana Station. The store has a selection of uniquely desirable items that include a Ferengi shuttle, a MACO tactical bridge officer, ship consoles, Klingon skirts, and other costume pieces. All of those items can be obtained only by collecting Lobi crystals, and the only real way you can gather more than 20 crystals is by buying keys and opening lockboxes.

The prices of the items in the store range from the "we're-sorry-we-screwed-up-the-initial-launch-of-this-crystal-thing-so-we'll-drop-in-one-cheap-item-so-people-playing-the-reruns-of-the-Featured-Episodes-can-get-it-without-having-to-spend-real-cash" 15 Lobi Crystals to 800 crystals for the Ferengi Shuttle.

When opened, most lockboxes contain anywhere from one to ten crystals and very rarely contain 100. Each key costs 100 C-Store points (approximately $1.25 US). Therefore, a player earning two to five crystals per box may have to spend $250-$400 in order to collect enough crystals to obtain the 800-crystal shuttle. Yes, it could be less than that. It could also be much, much more.

Of course, it's possible to grind the game to earn enough dilithium to trade for C-Store points to obtain a key. The going rate on the exchange is hovering around 300 dilithium for each C-Store point, meaning a player would have to earn at least 30,000 dilithium to buy one key. Since it's possible to earn only 8000 dilithium per day, it would take that player four days of max playing to earn a single key and then would likely only result in two Lobi crystals.

Whose time is it anyway?

On top of the hoopla the Lobi Crystal Consortium has caused, Cryptic pulled another stunner by releasing a highly anticipated mission in the popular shuttle/small craft map called The Vault.

The downside has been that the mission has been made available for play only on a completely arbitrary schedule. The mission has been relegated to the game's "event calendar" and appears on a floating schedule twice every 24 hours.

Players have one hour to complete the mission as many times as possible in order to earn Reman datalogs, which can be used to generate a special duty officer assignment, and in turn, can reward gear "including a very rare set of Mark XII ship equipment" if you're successful.

The obvious problem with the release has been the mere fact that it's available only for two hours every day. There are two other "event" missions in the game: the Mirror Universe events and the Borg Invasion of Defera. They are also time-gated.

The community (including me) has made its dissatisfaction with the expansion of restricted play heard pretty well in the forums and on many of the podcasts that focus on STO. A company representative recently tried to explain the use of restricted play as a means to corral players into the game at specific times of the day. While that may be true, there seems to be a majority of players who have jobs, families, community responsibilities, and hobbies that take priority over a video game. It seems counterintuitive for a game to make itself and its content less available to those who want to play it when they can, not when a developer says it's OK.

I have yet to play any of the restricted missions. I would like to. I'm the game's biggest Obisek fan, and I really would like to hear that Reman voice once more, but I'm not about to interrupt my work day or put off making dinner for my family in order to go listen to it.

I look forward to reading everyone's feedback on these subjects. Tell me why I'm wrong (or right). Tell me why Lobi crystals aren't a currency or why timed play is beneficial to the game.

Until next week, live long and prosper!

so Brooklyn asked me to share some funny stories about the police academy, well here is one of the funnier/awkward ones, but I have to give a little background for it to make much sense. It all started at the gunrange when a guy we'll call Weven (becasue it rhymes with his real name) and Wessica( because it ryhmes with hers) Well Weven and Wessica started talking as we all had done in the beginning of the academy and much like high school soon there were several cliques among the massive 25 of us. Well Weven as we all found out was married and had just had his first daughter and had moved from california, where he was previously a prison guard and was moving here to start a new life with cheaper cost of living for his family, so he and his wife and newborn were living in their families basement somewhere in north texas. Wessica as we all learned was married as well to a Local Police officer and who had been a recent graduate of our academy(the class right before ours) and she was mother to three children herself. Well everything seemed very kosher until we went to qualify at the range and Wessica started to make everyone breakfast and Weven made the comment of "Hey Wessica , would you be my next wife?" from that moment forward, it was a 180 degree switch in their behavior, they began sneaking off with each other and were even found having sex by the security people at the academy, on one of the fields. and there was one occasion where Wessica's husband camped out all day in the parking lot to watch what she did and with who. pretty epic stuff, no idea what ever happened to them i know Wessica got a job outside the county as a police officer and I think Weven is also a polcie officer somewhere in south texas. not really acceptable stuff but it is what it is, and it would suck to be their significant other, and yes brooklyn, you would've done Wessica. lol
the end.

Any cross faction grouping is happening on a per mission basis. For Season 6 we plan to introduce a new PVP mission that allows cross faction teaming.

Just saw this over on the STO Homepage:

For the entire month of May, rotating each week, the Feature Episode Series are once again offering their special, unique rewards* for completion! Don't miss your chance to (re)play the Feature Episodes and earn limited-time rewards. Read more to learn about which series will be featured each week.

I'm a happy bunny as I was missing 3 of the 4 rewards :)

And for anyone who already had the unique rewards from those episodes the info also says:
"For players whose characters already have all the rewards, you will still want to re-play each of the series -- all players will be able to find hidden, surprise rewards that have been added to each episode. "
